Between-the-Images brings together 20 illustrated essays written by Raymond Bellour between 1981 and 1989. Considering the works and the strategies of artists and filmmakers such as Kuntzel, Godard, Marker, Bergman, Antonioni, Hill, and Viola, he examines the slowbut inexorable change in moving images, putting an emphasis on three major areas of transformation: between stillness and movement, inside de photographic analogy, and between language and image. At once poetic and concisely argued, his essays historicize the creative passages between film, photography, and video, now pervasive in contemporary culture.
