ENG / Arts Awareness’ is a workshop designed to make students aware of what their senses perceive and to increase their ability to perceive; to ascertain what the responses to various perceptions are and to accept both perceptions and responses, and to increase their capacity to experience and deal with their environments. It is built on the premise that participants can learn to look closely, open their eyes, and react honestly. The goal of the ‘Art Awareness’ project were twofold: to test the validity of multiple museum visits as an educational procedure, and to develop a new method of teaching about art to urban high school students that could be adopted by and tailored to the needs of their institutions. The project was thought to take place in two sites: the classroom and an open space in the school area.

- In the classroom: At different points in the room, various objects were laid around. The students, blindfolded, are led to the objects, which they then touch and analyze through their touch, describing their weight, shape, texture, and size on the tape recorder. After the students have described all the objects, the blindfold is removed and the visual perception of the objects is compared to the sensorial one.

- Outside: Blindfolded students are asked to walk in the area, eventually bumping in various stations where they are required to smell and touch various objects, and into other blindfolded wandering students. On the side, noises are made to confuse their senses. One by one the students are pulled out of the space, their blindfold is taken off, and quickly they are questioned about how it felt, and their answers are recorded.
